I'm happy to announce that my painting "Leaving Ocean Point" was accepted into the Thirty-First Annual International Marine Art Exhibition at Mystic Seaport. The reception is September 25, 2010.
My painting "Light of Day" (cropped) appeared on the cover of the May 21, 2010 edition of Dan's Papers with an interview written by Marion Wolberg Weiss on page 12. Thanks Marion!
I met Jennett Meriden Russell by chance when I walked into my local frame shop, Bellport Arts and Framing, one day early last month. Jennett, a reporter for THE PRESS of Manorville and Moriches, was interviewing the owner, LuAnn Thompson, for an article on the Bellport Bay Festival poster contest. I was there to submit my entry for the contest and that fact was incorporated into the original article. An interest in my art experiences resulted in the following article in a later issue. Thanks Jennett!

Last month I gave a two part presentation on plein air painting to the South Bay Art Association (SBAA) in Bellport.
SBAA was founded in 1956 to encourage the creation and appreciation of the visual arts. Their activities include monthly meetings with demonstrations, lectures, critiques, morning sketch groups, workshops in various media, exhibits, newsletters, and many other events.
Part one of my presentation focused on outdoor equipment choices from the classic French easel to the various contemporary pochade boxes. With the remaining time I demonstrated how I start a painting on location, with a focus on my palette of colors, medium and brushes.
I'm happy to announce that my painting "Light of Day" has been selected as the winner of the third annual Bellport Bay Festival and Regatta poster contest. The Festival date is July 25, 2009.
From Bellport.com: Local artists were invited to participate in the third annual Bellport poster contest. This year’s competition was sponsored by the South Bay Art Association in conjunction with the Bellport Chamber of Commerce. The official poster for the Bellport Bay Festival and Regatta was chosen from among the entries. Submitted artwork reflected the essence of Bellport Bay, maritime scenes or boats of the Bellport area.
The winning artwork was an oil painting by Larry Johnston entitled, "Light of Day."
